My mom is so talented

This is a guest post written by my daughter, Charlotte. (Thank you, Charlotte!)

Growing up I never understood the thrill of needlepointing. My mom was, and still is, constantly needlepointing numerous trinkets for gifts, ornaments, and pillows. I never understood how a threaded object could be so meaningful or a perfect house decoration. However, as I got older, I began to see needlepoint in everyday life outside the house. From clothing to rugs it was engrained in our everyday lives. It is a perfect way to express your personal design or show off your favorite items in a form or an ornament or a Knick-Knack.

My first needle point item I received was a bracelet cuff in middle school for cotillion. I thought it was silly, I could just wear a real bracelet. However, the uniqueness of a handmade item outweighs any store-bought item. As I got older and college came around, my mom began crafting trinkets to remind me of home. From dish trays to store jewelry or signs to go around my dorm, the items reminded me of back home.

Once I committed to South Carolina my mom began to craft special pieces that revolved around my college. My most favorite is my flat Noodle pillow. While friends had pictures (and I did too) on our dorm walls of our furry siblings at home, I had a real Noodle I could sleep with so I wouldn’t miss my cat. I was also surprised to see a wooden tree with gamecock trinkets hanging from it in my room when I came home for winter break. From our school logo to the gamecock himself, these items allowed me to show school spirit at home and reminded me of my favorite second home.

As a late graduation present, I received a personalized needlepoint purse to use in college and in the future that had my initials on them. The purse was one of a kind and for sure an eye catcher amongst friends. Amongst many other unique pieces of needlepoint in my life these remain the most special. Being able to create and show off unique hand crafted items is a gift itself. My mom is really talented and it’s really special that I have these things she made. She’s a superstar.
